New shake in a weathered course
What the work involves
Cedar Shake Roofers in Pompano Beach
Cedar shake roofers repair split and missing shakes or replace a worn shake roof, and we do that work on residential and commercial buildings.
A "shake" is a thick piece of split cedar, rougher and heavier than a sawn wood shingle. Each one laps over the course below it, so one bad shake can come out without disturbing the roof around it.
-
One or a few
Split Shakes
The cracked shake is split out, its nails cut, and a new one slid up into the same course.
-
Gaps in a course
Missing Shakes
Where wind or age has taken a shake, a new one fills the gap before rain finds the layer beneath.
-
Down to the deck
Worn Roof Replaced
When most of the roof has worn out, it comes off in a full "tear-off" and a new roof goes on over the checked deck.
What to look for
Signs a Shake Roof Is Wearing Out
Split, cupped or missing shakes and moss or algae on the wood are the signs a shake roof is wearing out.
Look from the ground late in the day, when low sun throws a shadow under every lifted edge.
- Split shakes
Cracks running with the grain, sometimes right through, opening a path to the layer underneath.
- Cupped or curled shakes
Edges lifting or the face bowing as the wood wets and dries, so it no longer lies flat on the course below.
- Missing shakes
Gaps in a course after high wind, often with the pieces lying in the yard or the gutter.
- Moss or algae
Green or dark growth that holds water against the wood and softens it.

Repair or replace
Repair or Replace a Shake Roof
Shakes can be replaced one at a time, so wear in a few places is a repair. Wear across the whole roof calls for a new roof, in shakes or in another material such as tile or metal.
- We check this firstA few shakes split or missingReplace those shakes
- Wear across whole slopesA new shake roof
- Ready to be done with woodA new tile or metal roof
Once patches keep failing, the repair bills can add up past the cost of a new roof. We tell you which side of that line yours is on at the free estimate.
How it runs
From Your Call to a Sound Roof
We keep the same order on every shake job, so you know what comes next and what it costs before anyone climbs up.
- You call us
We answer Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 9 pm. Calls outside those hours go to voicemail and we return them the next working morning.
- A free look at the roof
We come out when we say we will, walk the roof and count what is split, cupped or missing, slope by slope.
- Repair or new roof, in writing
You hear which one your roof needs, and the whole job is written down before we start, with no surprise charges after.
- The work
Damaged shakes are split out and new ones fitted into their courses, or the old roof comes off to the deck for the new one.
- Cleanup
Old wood and loose nails leave with us, and magnets go over the yard before we do.
What it costs
What Sets the Price of Shake Work
A new roof is priced by the "square", 100 square feet of roof surface, and your figure comes from measuring your roof. A repair is priced by what we find needs fixing.
The square count follows the roof surface, not the floor plan, because pitch, hips and valleys add surface beyond the footprint of the house. From there the price moves with the material, the pitch, access and the roof's condition.
Damaged decking found under old shakes is the usual hidden cost, so a good written scope gives a unit price for deck repair before work starts.
Your roof, measured
No figure until we have seen it. The quote covers the whole job.
- Roof size, counted in squares
- Material: shakes, tile or metal
- Pitch and access to the roof
- Decking under the old shakes
Free and no obligation, with nothing owed for the visit.
